Check your voter registration…NOW!

September 25, 2008

Listening to the radio this afternoon, I heard a disturbing call from someone in my home state of Michigan.  The woman, who lives in a Detroit suburb, told the talk-show host that she’s been a long-standing voter.  But she noticed that she didn’t get her usual absentee ballot in the mail.

She checked with the local clerk and was told she was listed as not living at her current address.  Apparently, she had been targeted for voter caging — a technique to suppress votes by using returns from mailing lists.  Luckily, she had contacted her clerk in time to correct the error.

The moral is this: PLEASE don’t assume that your long-standing status as a voter will work for this election.  Please check with your local or county clerk.  You can also check out two Web sites: Vote for Change or Can I Vote?

You still have time to verify that your name is on the voting rolls.  Unfortunately, Michigan — a battleground state in the 2008 election — has been targeted this year for voter caging.  But this voter-suppression technique is done nationwide, not just in Michigan.

So please double-check the status of your voter registration today.

  1. Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. I just read about this tactic but hadn’t heard of any specific instances.
