Study: The best multitaskers DON’T multitask

August 25, 2009

In a surprising study of college students, researchers found that those most drawn to multitasking actually have the worst multitasking skills.

The study, conducted at Stanford University, measured the ability of undergraduates to remember, to switch from one task to another, and to focus on a task. Those who scored lowest on those skills were most likely to multitask.

“We were totally shocked,” said Stanford Professor Clifford Nass. “”The huge finding is, the more media people use, the worse they are at using any media.”

CBC News reports that the study is being published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

  1. Oh, don’t get me started on the bad habits of college students!

The tough thing is that, once the multitasking habit sets in, it’s a hard one for students (of any age) to break! Parents – pick this battle when your kids are young! No TV, music or other external stimuli during homework time. It pays off!
