First picture of a molecule

August 31, 2009

moleculeI feel as if I’m looking through a keyhole to discover what a real molecule looks like underneath it all.

In case you don’t recognize this molecule without its clothes on — wink, wink — it’s pentacene.   IBM scientists used an atomic force microscope to peek into the secret life of a molecule.  You can read about it here, courtesy of The Daily Mail online.

  1. It blows my me away that scientists can see something so small. I noticed from the photo in The Daily Mail article that all of the scientists were men. Makes me wonder if their keen visual sense helps them see the dishes on the counter or the dirty socks on the floor when they’re at home. 🙂

  2. You find the most interesting news items, Cindy. I never know what I’m going to learn when I visit here. Thank you for posting this amazing discovery.
