Be wary of 809, 284 and 876 area codes

November 14, 2009

If you are asked to return a phone call from any of the area codes above, please be very careful. Please see this notice from AT&T.

(Hat tip to my cousin Ellen for informing me of this scam.)

  1. Thanks for this information, Cindy. I get an awful lot of weird sales calls on my home office line, and Caller-ID isn’t always a help.

  2. This one is actually almost completely a hoax. Although there have been a handful of such reports, 99% of the websites referring to them are very misleading. The cost of calls to the 809 area code are about $.25/minute, so even if they manage to keep you on the phone for a few minutes, you’d only be out $1 or so. More details can be found at http://www.wherecall.com/809.htm .

  3. Thanks for this info. I think it’s a shame that there are things to be leary about when answering the phone these days. A phone call used to be a welcome interruption, but now it’s as likely as not that it will be someone soliciting, or there may not even be a person on the other end but a “robo call” to push an opinion. Oh, well, I still answer it just in case there’s something good on the other end….
