Small-minded vandalism

November 3, 2012

Okay…in the grand scheme of things, this is not a big deal. However, it is utterly cowardly, silly and small-minded. Last night, someone defaced our Obama/Biden lawn sign by spray-painting in red the letters “ROM” on each side of the sign. Our family had been out visiting with my mother-in-law, so the culprit evidently waited until we weren’t home…and darkness could cover the deed.

Four years ago, someone stole our Obama/Biden sign off our lawn, and I blogged about the futility of that deed because it simply spurred us to go back to the local campaign office and make a second donation for another sign.

Evidently, this year’s spray-painter doesn’t agree with Evelyn Beatrice Hall’s famous remark in support of everyone’s right to free speech: “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”

If this is the worst I have to complain about, I feel extremely fortunate. At this moment, on America’s eastern seaboard, millions of fellow citizens are coping with the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the largest hurricane in recorded history. You may disagree on what is causing 100-year storms to occur every few years now.  I have my own theory and Mitt Romney has his.

However, we will proudly leave out our defaced lawn sign with the hope that it will encourage a few more people to vote for the candidate who understands the need to deal with climate change…not the candidate who mocks it:
